Notorious French prison that operated for 100 years (1852-1952). Famous inmates included Alfred Dreyfus (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreyfus_affair ), Henri "Papillon" Charrière (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Charri%C3%A8re ), Clement Duval (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cl%C3%A9ment_Duval ) and René Belbenoît (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9_Belbeno%C3%AEt ).

The island is now administered by the Guiana Space Centre (which has a launch site in nearby Kourou) and is visited by 50,000 tourists annually.

Devil's Island featured in the film Papillon is a 1973 prison film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, based on the best-selling autobiography by the French convict Henri Charrière.
