This is a farm that was, allegedly, originally used by the Portuguese military to supply its soldiers stationed on the Island of Sal during Cape Verde's colonial period. It was utilized in the mid-1990's by a farming cooperative producing vegetables for the local market. The cooperative's farming techniques included a "drip" irrigation system that economized on the scarce water resources available at the site. The farm produced, among other things, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, squash, canteloupe, watermelon and okra. The area surrounding the farm is known locally as "Terra Boa", which can be translated from Portuguese as "good land" or "good soil".
