This area is a birding paradise.

The Mahonie Loop passes through some dense mixed woodland on red sandy soils and the Matukwale Dam is situated on the western side in the best 'sandveld' woodland, including some Miombo or brachystegia species. Here you should look out for gorgeous bush shrike, white-breasted cuckooshrike, narina trogon, yellow-spotted nicator, thick-billed cuckoo, broad-billed roller, mosque swallow, grey-headed parrot and grey-hooded kingfisher.

The few Miombo trees have also attracted Mashona hyliota and rare racket-tailed roller has also been recorded from mopane woodland in this region. Crowned eagle regularly breed near the dam and in late summer a number of migrant warblers occur in the thickets, including icterine warbler, European marsh warbler and river warbler, and thrush nightingale.
