Arauco, a coastal province of southern Chile, bounded N., E. and S. by the provinces of Concepción, Biobío, Malleco and Cautín. Area, 2458 sq. mi.; pop. (est. 1902) 70,635. The province originally covered the once independent Indian territory of Araucania, but this was afterwards divided into four provinces. It is devoted largely to agricultural pursuits. The capital Lebu (pop. 25 000) is situated on the coast about 55 m. south of Concepción, with which it is connected by rail.
