In 1932 the Jewish community of Santiago de Chile purchased an extensive land lot in Enrique Donoso 489, sector RECOLETA, with the purpose of providing a religious cemetery for the community. The cemetery was designed by the architect Pablo Hegedus, and contains a number of monuments commemorating significant events in the history of the Jewish people, as well as mausoleums and tombs belonging to Jewish families residing in Chile.
Originally called “Cementerio Israelita de Conchalí” (“Jewish cemetery of Conchalí” — Conchalí being the district in which it is placed), in April 2007 the Jewish community changed its name to Cementerio “Puerta del Cielo” (Cemetery “Gate of Heaven”), a name that was felt represented better the faith, beliefs, and traditions of the Jewish people.

The cemetery “Puerta del Cielo” is located in the general area of Recoleta, very close to the Cementerio de Santiago de Chile (Cemetery of Santiago de Chile), the main cemetery of the city, and also close to the Cementerio Católico (Catholic Cemetery) and the Cementerio “Parque Las Encinas” (Cemetery “Park Las Encinas”).
