A short drive away from the coastal city of Sur Ras al Hadd is one of the beaches that is the nesting ground for four species of turtles. The turtles return to the same spot every 25 years to breed. Sadly however, only 1 in a 1000 hatchlings will survive.

I had visited this fascinating beach in September 2007. It was an amazing sight, how thousands of olive ridley and greyback turtles would wash upon the shore in the night to lay their eggs. I am astonished at the intelligence of these creatures as to how they come exactly to the same beach each season and lay upto 90 eggs in a pit, cover it with sand, dig another dummy pit to confuse predators and go back to the sea at the break of dawn. I also saw hatchings from previous layings, these tiny turtles just hatch open from their shells and rush towards the sea at the break of dawn. Sadly many of these tiny turtles are eaten up by crabs on the shore or birds pick them up from the shallow waters and only a few survive the wrath of mother nature.
