The dam is part of a series of 4 small dams built to raise the level of Lake Kénogami at the beginning of the 20th century in order to provided electricity for the pulp and paper industry in Jonquière and Chicoutimi (now Ville Saguenay). The dam ended the flow of the river's water into Lake St. John. A part of the old fur trade route, a way to the Hudson Bay.
