The Hwanghae Steel Complex is the second largest (behind the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex in Chongjin, North Hamgyong) steel complex in the DPRK. It was built in 1914 by the Mitsubishi Corporation as the Kyom-I-po Steel Manufacturer. It currently uses an oxidization process that replaces coke with anthracite coal creating cast iron. There are 25,000 employees who annually produce 1 million tons of steel, 1 millions tons of iron wire and 700,000 tons of rolled steel.
