School of Chemical & Materials Engineering.
Mission:
Mission of the School of Chemical & Materials Engineering (SC&ME) is “To provide a platform for the development of quality interdisciplinary program of teaching and research in the fields of Advanced Energetic Materials, Combustion and Propulsion, Chemical Reaction and Separation, Advanced Engineering Materials for Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical, Bio, Thermal, Optical, Aeronautic & Astronautic, and other applications”.
Academic Goals:
The School’s academic goals are:-
a. To become a School of excellence for hi-tech education and applied research.
b. To attract and engage faculty and intellectual and scholarly students of the highest calibre.
c. To provide elaborate infrastructure with advanced training and educational facilities.
d. To create and offer conducive environment for scholastic and intellectual pursuits so as to facilitate acquisition of scientific education.
e. To develop a campus culture evincing high ethical and value orientation to venture beyond the known horizons of education by dint of will, creativity and knowledge.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The School for Chemical & Materials Engineering (SC&ME) is established as a School of Excellence to act as a precursor for research and development within public and private sector. It strives to attract faculty of outstanding talent and ability and to provide them with a supporting and enabling environment. It hopes to produce highly skilled engineers, scientists and researchers who distinguish themselves by their professional competence, pragmatic approach to problem solving and organizational abilities.
The School is primarily a Post Graduate School catering for the need of Masters and PhD students but an undergraduate program is also to be established within the framework of the Centre. The first batch of Masters leading to PhD students is inducted in fall 2006, in the two disciplines of Energetic Materials Engineering and Materials and Surface Engineering.
The School is composed of a Department of Chemical Engineering and a Department of Material Sciences. Both departments offer individual Masters and research programs although the resources of the School including faculty and laboratory facilities are interdependent in both of these programs. A number of state of the art research equipment is available to the students and researchers of this Centre. This includes High Resolution Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Infra Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (GC MASS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Thermal Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), to name a few.
The research and teaching activities of the School are focused along Advanced Energetic Materials, Chemical Reaction and Separation Processes, Surface Coatings and Surface Engineering, Ceramics and Glasses, Polymers and Composites, Bio Materials and Novel Synthesis Techniques.
The School is offering a Masters leading to PhD program in the fields mentioned above. From 2008 candidates are able to apply directly to the PhD program.
