This is the site of the former Clutton Union Workhouse, built following the Poor Law Reform Act in the 1830s. It covered the parishes around Clutton, as far afield as Norton & Radstock.

It took on the care of the chronically sick under Part 3 of the 1948 National Assistance Act; only being superseded by Goldney House - a purpose-built Residential Home for Older People built by Somerset County Council at Temple Cloud circa 1970.

The former workhouse was then partially demolished, while part was extensively refurbished / gentrified to form rather imposing apartments.

It was certainly the case right up until the period following WW2 when the older residents / family members in the whole district 'begged' their families to try to ensure that they 'didn't land up over Clutton'.
