Pachmarhi, a plateau spread in an area of 23 square miles, was purchased by the British government for Rs 50,000 from the local jagirdar. Till 1876, there were hardly any homes though some aboriginals (local tribals) resided there amid mango and guava groves, says a note prepared by Madhavrao Powar, Nathuji's grandson. It was read out to President Rajendra Prasad visited the hill station in 1961, claims the family.the writings, which include references from 95-year-old resident CAJ Rodriques, the district gazetteer and Forsyth's book, bring out curious tales and trivia about this place."The only transport service available was bullock and horse carts run by a rich contractor Seth Bulaki. Named Simla, the horse wagon service also brought mail and was the connection to Pipariya 60 kms away in the plains," mentions Madhavrao's note.No Indian was allowed to own a house in the civil area and those who had some property had to sell it either to the government or the missionary, says the note. The travelling time to Sohagpur, which is now a two-hour drive from Pachmarhi, used to be 3-4 days.
The Maharaja of Jodhpur, who was brought to Pachmarhi for political reasons, introduced the game of horse polo in the hill station. Local jagirdar Raja Bhabut Singh was said to have some magical powers. Madhavrao quotes Rodriques as having seen Bhabut Singh mesmerizing a tiger and even bullets cold not harm him.
