A site of heavy fightings in World War 2: in Seprember 1939 and in June 1941. The Citadel is located on the central island. A long ring defensive barracks, built of strong red bricks in the 19th century, skirt the island. A majestic war memorial, built in 1971, commemorates the heroism of Soviet combatants in June-July 1941.
