Optic telegraph (semaphore) tower (Saint Petersburg)

Russia / Sankt Petersburg / Saint Petersburg
tower, telegraph, draw only border, 1830s construction

This lis the last telegraph tower built in 1838—1839 годах. The operators (4 persons) had their premises in the palace attic and stood their watches in turn, like on all other telegraph posts of the line. Before 1917 the tower was topped with a gold-plated two-headed Imperial eagle. Originally, the tower was built after a project of L.Charlemagne in 1835. Before that (since 1833) there was just a wooden booth for the semaphore signals. The optic telegraph line, consisting of semaphore towers which repeated each other's signals, connected the imperial residence with Kronstadt - the main navy base.
