Lake of geologists is located in Uhersko village in Stryj district - in the Outer zone of Ukrainian Carphatian foredeep place where in the territory Ukraine started gas production in the beginning of XX century.

It is the largest man-made gas crater in Precarpathians that was formed as a result of the accident at the drilling wells in 1946. After explosion it was 125 m (ft 410) in diameter and 40 m (ft 130) depth. Pillar of fire reached 30 meters high, and at night the glow was visible from a distance of over 50 km (miles 30). In place of the well the lake was formed.
