The community of Lakeview was established in 1876. The Nevada-California-Oregon narrow gauge railroad started from Reno, Nevada in 1881 and reached Alturas, California in 1908. The town of Lakevfiew donated land for a train depot in 1911 and convinced the railroad be extended north to Lakeview, which was only planned to New Pine Creek. The railroad reached Lakeview on January 10, 1912. The Mission Revival style two-story brick Lakeview Depot was completed in 1912 and the grand opening was held on November 5 . In 1928 the Southern Pacific acquired the line and converted it to standard gauge, but reduced passenger service to three days a week. Passenger service ended December 2, 1937. Freight service by the Southern Pacific ended July 15, 1975 and the depot was closed and sold. The building is currently a private residence.
