In the days of segregation this was the area beach for blacks...whites used Pensacola Beach. It was named for an African-American War hero, Rosamond Johnson, who was the first resident of Escambia County to die in the Korean War. Private Johnson had carried two wounded soldiers to safety and was returning for a third when he was killed. He was 17 years old. www.perdidokeyassoc.org/johnson_beach.htm
