The Tour de la Reine Mathilde (Queen Matilda Tower) and the Tour Puchot were added to the fortification in the early 13 th century to strengthen the castle defences where the town wall butted up against the fortress wall. Built to a circular plan, in line with advances in 13 th century military architecture, these two towers were substantially redesigned starting in the 15 th century.
