Piles of tailings, primarily sand, from which iron ore has been extracted. The iron mine, whose flooded pit is seen nearby, ceased operations in the mid-1970s. At one time, it was the third-largest open pit magnetite mine in the world. The tailings pile at one point resembled sand dunes, but attempts to plant trees and the invasion of local grasses and plants have stabilized it considerably in the years since the mines closed.
