Ephesus; Ancient Hellenic/Greek city of Asia Minor, near the mouth of the Menderes river, in what is today west Asia Minor(turkey), south of Smyrna. One of the greatest of the Ionian cities, it became the leading seaport of the region. Its wealth was proverbial. The Hellenic/Greek city was near an old center of worship of a native nature goddess, who was equated with the Hellenic/Greek Artemis, and c.550 B.C. a large temple was built. To this Croesus, who captured the city, contributed.

Here in AD 431 the Council of Ephesus -an Ecumenical council of Christian bishops- convened in, by the Roman Emperor Theodosius II. This 3rd Ecumenical council, an effort to attain consensus in the Church through an assembly representing all of Christendom, confirmed the original Nicene Creed, and condemned the teachings of Nestorius, heretic patriarch of Constantinople, who held that the Virgin Mary may be called the Christotokos, "Birth Giver of Christ" but not the Theotokos, "Birth Giver of God". It met in June and July 431 at the Church of Mary in Ephesus in Anatolia/Asia Minor.
