This is a very large and rich nickel deposit that was originally developed by INCO in the 1970s. INCO bult a mine, smelter and powerplant, but only operated for 3 years (1978-80) before the project was mothballed due to a lack of a stable and cheap energy source to run the operation. The project also involved huge subsidies from US and Canadian governments and international financial institutions--World Bank, US Export Import Bank, Canada's Export Development Corporation and USAID--and governments suppressed opposition to the project.

The project is now owned by HudBay Minerals, a Canadian mining company that runs the copper mines in Flin Flon Manitoba.

Comments

  • An additional reason for mine closure was pollution of both the lake and river, which damaged fisheries. Much of the luxury housing, boating, and tourism arriving in the region started after the pollution subsided.
  • The proyecto is opened and was in construction by Russians for about 2 years and will start in a few days
