Facts:
- This building follows the tripartite formula of base (two story), shaft (13 story), and crown (one story). The spare use of classical details, the almost Sullivanesque floral ornamentation, and the overall simplicity of design points toward Chicago School early modernism.
- The fire escapes on the east side of the Barnes & Thornburg Building (then Merchant's Bank) were used by Indianapolis firefighters to fight a major fire in the Thomas Building, only one-half block away.
- The tallest high-rise building in Indianapolis from 1909-1962, when the City-County Building was completed.
- This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
- This is the tallest building completed in Indianapolis between 1900-1909.
