The Pähkinäsaari -treaty in 1323 divided the Finnish people for the first time ´officially´ into two parts. The Western Finland was ruled by the Swedish Kingdom and the Eastern by the Principality of Novgorod. It was also a matter of the interpretation between two types of christianity. Any how karelians are genetically and linguistically finnish.
