Acording to legend: In 851 AD, Ragnar Lodbrok ordered a group of vikings to be led by a Frankish man known as Eaqel to set sail and ransack the city of Abernquei. Eaqel insisted that attacking Abernquei would bring much gold to the vikings.

They landed in 852 and attacked. However, the viking force was almost completely destroyed, and Eaqel soon sided with the Frankish defense. He was captured trying to go to a town next to Abernquei known as Queberi and was decapitated by the enraged vikings.

A survivor of the pillaging, known as Jene, constructed the graveyard immediatly after the vikings fled. It was completed in 855 with the markings "nastres le abernquei le cenins baseul ii" contained on a pillar in the center of the building.

Jene died in 881, on the 30th year, and same day, of the viking attacks. He was put into the building in a newly made room.

The building contains the graves of 677 vikings, 28 Frankish soldiers, and 234 civilians.

  • This place was been edited a long time ago. Nevertheless I got some doubts about it. It could be a fake (and if it is so, not a bad one). I'going to check it. But perhaps there is somebody who knows more about it.
