France / Languedoc-Roussillon / Terrats /

Llupia is a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France.
Land area-6.88 km2 (2.66 sq mi)
Population-1,734 (1999)
Llupia The name comes from the word "wolf"(Loup), probably because there were many in the region.
The village appears for the first time in 1019, relatively early in the Carolingian era. The place was named after itschurch as was always the case at that time. It was the Romanesque church of St Thomas.
Around the church has formed a hamlet of houses whose inhabitants sought the protection of a building strong enough to protect them.
During the Middle Ages, the lords of Llupia played an important role in the nobility Roussillon. A sign of this role lies in the fact that they were the second owners of the Casa Xanxo, in Perpignan.
