Approximate site of s village, founded in 1867 by Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi, two "prophets" preaqching peaceful resistance to the NZ government's program of confiscating land as punishment for local tribes' participation in a rebellion (or waar of patriotic resistance, depending on your point of view).

The villagers were eventually forced to leave in an operation in which the only injury occured when a horse stoode on a bystander's foot, but Parihaka cas come to be thought of as the scene of a bloddy racist massacre.

  • I am not confident that the position of this tag is correct. It as at the lat and long shown on the Wikipedia entry for Parihaka, but I would have expected to see some buildings at the site, and signs of a road leading to it. Please feel free to correct the location, if you have more information.
