KUC operated an open pit gold mine here from 1989 until 2001. In a process called heap leaching, the gold ore was placed on large pads, where they were sprayed with a weak cyanide solution that leached the gold from the ore. Though mining ended in 2001, by 2007 KUC was still recovering around 10,000 ounces of gold each year from the pads.
