Groote Eylandt

Groote Eylandt is the largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria in northeastern Australia. It is the homeland of, and is owned by, the Anindilyakwa people (who still speak the isolated Anindilyakwa language).

Groote Eylandt is the 4th largest island of Australia.

Groote Eylandt lies approximately 50 km from the Northern Territory mainland and eastern coast of Arnhem Land (approximately 630 km from Darwin). The island measures approximately 50 km from east to west and 60 km north—south, a total area of 2,326.1 km². It is generally quite low-lying, with an average height above sea level of 15 m, although Central Hill reaches an elevation of 219 meters.

5.1623. Coolsteerdt. Charts resulting from a Dutch voyage of 1623 marked the island as Groote Eylandt, which mean Great Island. The original Dutch spelling has been retained.

  • There were some good neatheards right here in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Those neatheards were quite pococurante, and they seemed also a bit valetudinarians. It seemed they were going to amass a posse, some sort of trainband, something like an arrière-ban for a special purpose. They had potsherds and prills in their hands and some stover for their horses. I really thought back then that those stumblebums were real jackanapeses.
  • Even people from the Nullahbor Plain now come to Groote Eylandt.
