As the city grew it became obvious that its cemeteries, occupying valuable real estate, could not be extended. The Mortuary Station was built for funeral trains to the grand new cemetery, the Necropolis, at Rookwood.
This statioon building was also one of the first public buildings in Sydney designed by a woman architect.
