Unterseeboot 405 was a Type VIIC submarine of the Kriegsmarine during World War II and was part of a wofpack shadowing an allied convoy protected by the USS Card (CVE-11) battle group when she was depth charged by destroyers and destroyer escorts and brought to the surface.
Following a running surface battle with the USS Borie (DD-215) the U-405 was rammed and sunk with all hands on November 1st, 1943. The USS Borie was also severely damaged by the ramming and sank the following day, with the loss of 23 of her crew.
