Aldermen's House (Mechelen)

Belgium / Antwerpen / Mechelen / Steenweg, 1
guildhall, listed building / architectural heritage, 14th century construction

This building was begun in 1288 as a meeting hall for the aldermen of Mechelen. In 1473 Charles the Bold made it the seat of what would later be called the Great Council, the supreme court of the Low Countries. The court moved in 1616 to the former palace of Margaret of Austria, 500 meters east of here. The old 'schepenhuis' is now a museum displaying many local sculptures from the 16th century.
