Officially opened in 1875, the cemetery is a microcosm of Cooktown history, illustrating the diversity of national, ethnic and religious groups involved in the region's development. The Chinese shrine, erected by Cooktown's Chinese community in 1877, is well preserved and a rare example of its type.
