  • Summary of unethical and dishonorable behavior by the headmaster of Al Hammad International Developed School by Concerned Parents. As parents of students at Al Hammad International Developed School we are gravely concerned about our children loosing another teacher. Children related so much to the teacher and were very upset when the teacher was fired on very dubious ground. We wanted to understand why teachers are so often dismissed and contacted teachers who were discharged during the 2012/13 school year. A friend that is employed by the school managed to slip us their contact details. Most of these teachers that we contacted are from South Africa. Some resigned as well, but even their resignations were directly related to the conduct of the current headmaster. All were very eager to participate as they felt that the school has potential and would do much better without this domineering person. This is what we discovered: Firstly, they all had very negative ideas of the headmaster. According to them there is a serious debate in the school whether he has a narcissistic personality, is bipolar or has a persecution complex. They all are of opinion that his behavior is very unpredictable and erratic. He constantly expects all teachers to worship him and would not tolerate any form of educational or scholastic debate as he is the only one who knows and understands. There are cameras in every class room and the teachers’ movements are monitored on a big screen that is located in the headmaster’s huge office. He will then respond with fury and a teacher would be asked to pack his/her bags even after one minor transgression. The teacher is always sent home the same day he or she are fired, effectively blocking him or her to approach the Qatari Supreme Council of Education or the Department of Labor. The teacher will then often not be paid for the part of the month he/she has taught, if they are paid, costs relating to the initial plane ticket or expenses to get their residents permit will be deducted. This type of behavior will be illegal in all developed countries and is a major transgression of workers’ rights. We as parents do not understand how he gets away with this type of dreadful abuse. I quote one teacher I communicated with: “The headmaster maintains an ethos of fear and anxiety that is instilled by his constant charades of shouting, humiliating and ridiculing students. The students and teachers alike are scared of him as they are especially fearful of being demeaned in front of their peers. He seriously confuses fear with respect. Besides his ethos of “rule by fear” he will also “divide and rule” by always having a certain number of teachers close to him that he will in various ways molly cuddle and please, these cronies will be his eyes and ears on the ground. They will maintain their allegiance as the benefits are rewarding and they will turn on their countrymen to maintain the position as a favorite”. Another way of keeping his aura of authority is by keeping his staff guessing when they would be allowed to go on holiday or leave as he does not inform the teachers timeously when they will be permitted to go on leave. Literally days before he thinks they can go, he informs them, by that he prevents teachers to book their tickets in time to get proper discounts as a result teachers will lose money, in his effort to demonstrate he is in charge and everyone has to wait for him to “speak the word”. It is apparently also used as a system of punishment as he would tell them they neglected certain areas and therefore their vacation would only start on the date determined by him; effectively keeping teachers at school for weeks, just waiting, after the students have gone on holiday. The teacher also feels that: “Competent teachers are also fired because of conduct outside of school hours, often about “gossiping” or doing something that is “unbecoming”. Teachers are then dismissed without any warnings or preventative assistance provided; just being told this was his or her last day and then flown back the same day.” The headmaster does not understand that a teacher’s ability is refined through time and experience and that a teacher only becomes effective after teaching for about two years in a culture of acceptance and guidance. When joining the school the teachers are asked to sign a contract, they are not provided a copy and most teachers feel that it would be futile as he has command of their lives while teaching there. These contracts grossly compromise them, but a refusal or a request to debate stipulations will surely result in them being sent home. I quote a teacher: The quote a prevailing expression amongst the staff: “When Abdelraasman asks a teacher to jump, the teacher would ask, ‘How high, Your Excellency?’ ” It is also expected of teachers to shout as loud as possible at students and to ridicule and degrade them as is his method. Our children are of the opinion that it does not work as they all have seen it before and that the effect will only last for about a day and the students will then just carry on as before. He has created a mind-set of impertinence and scorn. He would apparently often say it is “the way the way to handle Arab children”. We are Arabs, and strongly disagree. One of my gravest concerns is that the students are coached and trained to answer exam and test papers, as no students would be failed. They would be given the format of the exam or test beforehand, so memory would be tested not their ability to analyze, conclude or infer. The students are highly aware that they would not be failed and will often use it as an excuse not to study. The students whom abuse this “system” would then become the problem pupils and those that pose constant discipline challenges. Discipline of the whole school is the responsibility of the social worker. And she is seen as highly ineffective, so teachers are mostly on their own, as there is not a good and proper structure that addresses the problem collectively and efficiently. The owners of this school might hold the headmaster in high esteem as chasing profits is his major concern, in which he apparently succeeds as it is often, mentioned how much was earned during a financial year. The owners however also have large responsibilities towards the parents who send their children there to be educated and prepared for life, not just to make money for the shareholders. Records of how many teachers were discharged and RP cancelled would be available from the authorities and the school to confirm the tremendous staff turnover of this institution. The number of students who failed could also be ascertained the same way. We do understand that this anonymous letter could be seen as a petty and personal attack on an individual. But we deem it very necessary as the school of our children has a great potential and is severely jeopardized by only one loose cannon and power drunk autocrat. I am hopeful that this letter may motivate the proper and objective scrutiny by the Department of Labor, Department of Education and Supreme Educational Council. Otherwise I will have to remove my child. Regards, Concerned Parents
