James Cook Museum (Cooktown)

Australia / Queensland / Helensvale / Cooktown

Generally held to be the best regional museum in Australia and a must-see whilst in Cooktown. The Museum has the original anchor and one of the cannons from the HM Bark Endeavour, and also houses fascinating collections of Cook memorabilia, and documents and records of the region's maritime, mining, Indigenous and Chinese history. With the help of local clans, much of Cooktown's history - including the First Contact with Cook - is also told from the Aboriginal perspective, giving visitors a real insight into Cooktown's rich Indigenous culture.
