Kairi township was a busy timber town. The two large sheds are what remains of the industry which closed down with the advent of World Heritage listing. It is surrounded by rich volcanic soils used fro maize, peanut and potato production. dairying remains an imprtant activity. Queensland Department of primary Industries has a reserach station/farm to the east of town on the edges of Tinaroo dam.
