The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Persian: دانشکده برق و کامپيوتر دانشکده فنی دانشگاه تهران) was established in 1934, the same time as the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering, in University of Tehran. Students, in those days, could enroll and study in one of the “Industrial Engineering”, fields of Established Engineering or Electrical Engineering. The former name of this field was the Electromechanics Engineering. In 1961 the Electromechanics Engineering was divided into the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering branches and later in 1965, the Electrical Engineering branch was itself divided into the “High Voltage” and “Low Voltage” courses. The number of faculty members for the high voltage and low voltage course were only 5 persons respectively. In 1970 the education system in the Department was changed into units, for the first time. In 1983 the Electrical Engineering Department was divided into the four main courses of “Telecommunications”, “Power”, “Control” and “Electronics”. Computer Engineering was added in 1989.
Considering the computer engineering division with two subsections of “Software Engineering” and “Hardware Engineering” there are a total of six different division at the B.Sc. level in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the moment. In addition, there are the two divisions of “Biomedical Engineering” and “Machine Intelligence (Robotics)” at the Msc. Level, which bring the total number of active divisions to eight.
There are also 45 Electrical Engineering Ph.D students which are enrolled in to the Department through very competitive special entrance exams. It must be mentioned that the first graduate in the Electrical Engineering course at the Ph.D. level in the whole country was from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Tehran. At the moment there are 63 full time Faculty members in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, who are engaged in different educational and research activities.
Due to the brilliant scientific, educational and research background and abilities of the Faculty members and students in the Department, there is close cooperation between the Department and many governmental and private research centers within and outside the country.
