The biggest settlement in the Niijima village (which includes Niijima and Shikanejima islands). Boasts a museum (with a big collection of surfing boards from 1960s), several restaurants, pensions, a shochu refinery (local brand is quite known), and a couple of "souveneer food" shops: one selling mostly stinky but otherwise nice "kusaya" dried fish, and the other one making also famous organic milk cookies. (Warning: the latter shop is in corresponding seasons swarmed with moskitoes, so do not forget your sprays).
