Matinicus Rock Lighthouse

USA / Maine / Vinalhaven /
 lighthouse  Add category

One of the most remote lighthouses in the United States.

The lighthouse was made famous by the courageous work of Abbie Burgess, a 15-year-old lighthouse keeper's daughter who tended to her sick mother, cared for her siblings and kept the lighthouse lamps lit during a ferocious month-long winter storm in 1856 when her father was caught on shore.

Many children are familiar with the story as it is the subject of a popular children book "Keep the Lights Burning Abbie"

The US Coast Guard has named one of the "Keeper" Class buoy tenders in her honor, and the USCGC Abbie Burgess is homeported in nearby Rockland, Maine, where she is buried.
