Iao Valley State Monument

The state park is located on 6.2 acres (2.5 ha) at the end of ʻĪao Valley Road (Highway 32). The ʻĪao Needle (Kūkaʻemoku), a landmark in the state park, is a vegetation-covered lava remnant rising 1,200 feet (370 m) from the valley floor or 2,250 feet (690 m) above sea level.

  • The best time to visit is when the Trade Winds are blowing the wrong way, as this is normally the wet, foggy side of the West Maui Mountains.
  • One of the most peaceful places on the island the river is clear and pure rain water filtered by all the lava rock it runs thru if somewhat on the cold side...pristine tropical environment! One of my favorite spots.
