After the Soviet Army started attack on East Prussia in January 1945, the concentration camp Stutthof with its side camps has to be eliminated. Thousands of prisoners have been chased via Koenigsberg to the Sambian coast near Palmnicken, where they first have been imprisoned in an old mine (Annagrube) and then, on Jan 31, 1945, chased into the cold sea and shot dead. From 7000 prisoners started at Stutthof just 3000 reached Palmnicken, and only 12-15 people survived the massacre committed by SS and helpers.
