Formerly part of the defence ring around Antwerp to protect it from the French. After WWII, it was used by the Belgian army for barracks and as a storage depot, with part of it accessible to the public. Since August 2000 owned by the city of Mortsel and used as a venue for cultural activities and open-air concerts.
