Two 4.7" British Armstrong guns on pedestal mounts were mounted here from 1899 to 1918.

Battery Thomas was named on May 15, 1903 in honor of Captain Evan Thomas, 4th U.S. Artillery, who served with distinction in the Civil war and who was killed April 26, 1873 in action with Modoc Indians at the Lava Beds, California.
