Within a clearing dotted with trees and small dark stone crosses lie the remains of more than 21,000 German soldiers, sailors and airmen. In the center, topped by a large dark cross, which is flanked by statues is an impressive tumulus, which marks the resting place for 207 unknown and 89 identified German soldiers, interred together in a mass grave.

  • After being recovered from their field graves near Gaumesnil Tank Commander SS-Hauptsturmführer Michael Wittmann and his crew was officially buried in the German Military Cemetery of "De La Cambe" in Normandy, France. Michael Wittmann is buried in square 47, row 3, grave 120 of "De La Cambe". Credited with 141 tank and 132 artillery kills Wittmann was to become the most famous exponent of tank warfare in the Second World War - if not of all time
