The Treasury (الخزنة Al Khazneh) is one of the most elaborate buildings in the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. The building is carved out of sandstone and is a popular tourist attraction.
t is unknown as to why Al Khazneh was originally built, probably between 100 BC and 200 AD. Its Arabic name Treasury derives from a legend that bandits or pirates hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level.

The Khazne, or Treasury, is the best-known monument of Petra, primarily because of its location and the striking view of it through the narrow crack of the Siq. The complete name of the monument in Arabic is Khaznet Faraoun or Treasury of the Pharaoh. Popular myth claims that the Pharaoh who drove Moses out of Egypt stored his wealth in the Khazne, specifically in the urn that sits at the top of the building. However, the funerary symbolism in the architecture suggests the Khazne was more likely to have been a tomb. Possibly built during the 1st century A.D. during the reign of Aretas IV, the size and intricacy of the Khazne is a symbol of the prosperity that the Nabataeans were enjoying during that time. - petranationaltrust.org/UI/showContent.aspx?ContentId=18...

  • The treasury built by the Nabuteans in 100 BC still stands today as a glorious monument to the achievments of man. The existence of the Nabutean people in ancient times is mentioned in the bible.
