Interstate 75 (Florida) - 'Alligator Alley'
Alligator Alley is a toll-road section of Interstate 75 ("hidden" state route SR 93) extending from Naples on the west coast of Florida to Weston on the east. It first opened in 1969 as "State Road 84", with most of the highway traverses the Everglades and Big Cypress. The name was given by the American Automobile Association during planning; they proposed it would be a useless road, an "alley for alligators". Originally just a two-lane road, it was widened to four lanes from 1992-93. "Upgraded" to Interstate 75 in 1993, after widening was completed. This section of I-75 has few exits and amenities, since it passes though several preserves and areas limited population.
