U.S. Route 1 is a major north-south U.S. numbered highway on the east coast of the United States. U.S. Route 301 is a major, 1,099 mile long, spur of Route 1 which runs generally to the east of it. The two routes overlap between Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia, connecting downtown and suburban commercial and residential areas. The road also passes through the communities of Chester and Colonial Heights. This road was once the primary route through the area, but was bypassed by the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike and, later, Interstate 95. Today it serves mostly local traffic. In Virginia, it was historically the route of the Jefferson Davis Highway, an auto trail from Washington DC to San Diego, and southern counterpart to the Lincoln Highway.
