The rest area is named for John Fenwick who was an early landowner and pioneer in south Jersey that originally held the deed to the land that now encompasses Cumberland and Salem Counties (1673). He founded the first town of New Salem on what is now called Salem Creek establishing a province granting civil and religious liberty to all persons who should settle there and peacefully purchased the land from the natives.
