Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge

USA / Virginia / Dahlgren /
 road bridge, toll bridge

This bridge carries U.S. Route 301 over the Potomac River between Dahlgren, Virginia and Newburg, Maryland. It is also known as the Potomac River Bridge and is the southernmost highway crossing of the Potomac River. It is a steel thru-truss with 3 spans built in 1939 and rehabilitated in 1984. It is 1.9 miles long and has 134 feet of clearance beneath the bridge. It has one narrow lane each way with only a jersey barrier separating traffic from the edge of the roadway. The bridge is tolled in the southbound direction only. This crossing has been suggested many times to carry a proposed interstate bypass of Washington DC. There are currently plans to replace the bridge with a four-lane structure to the north, with construction to begin in 2020.

Comments

  • There are upgrade proposals under consideration that would expand the bridge's capacity from two to four lanes to better handle traffic flow for Route 301, a major north-south artery. The plans call for constructing an additional two-lane span and continuing to operate the Nice Bridge or ceasing operations on the existing bridge altogether.
