Naval Surface Warfare Center - Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD)

USA / Virginia / Dahlgren /
 military, United States Navy

The NSWCDD was founded as the U.S. Naval Proving Ground on October 16, 1918, as a result of the expanded range on large caliber naval guns brought about by the launching of the British battleship HMS Dreadnought that revolutionized seapower, but was renamed ca. 1940 to the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory. In 1974, it was renamed the Naval Surface Weapons Center, and obtained its current name around 1990.

  • Oct 16, 2008 marks the 90th Anniversary of the first firing that occurred at Dahlgren (Oct. 16, 1918) to begin history here as a naval base. http://www.dcmilitary.com/stories/090408/southpotomac_28109.shtml
  • In 2003, military activities at the base were reorganized to create a “shore management” or host command that, in essence, serves as the landlord of the base. Six other military commands, some of which have more employees than the host command, are tenants at Dahlgren. Most of the scientists and engineers on the base work for these tenant commands. Here’s the list of Dahlgren commands: NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY SOUTH POTOMAC With 305 employees, it provides installation management and support for the Dahlgren base in King George County (known as Naval Support Facility Dahlgren) and three other Navy locations: Naval Support Facility Indian Head, Md., and small naval detachments at the Army’s Fort Belvoir in Northern Virginia and at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Capt. Catherine Hanft took over as commander in August 2008. NAVAL SURFACE WARFARE CENTER DAHLGREN DIVISION Largest tenant command by far, with about 2,800 military and civilian employees. Before the 2003 reorganization, the warfare center also operated as landlord of the base. In terms of mission, it is a direct descendant of the naval proving ground established in 1918. Currently has 90 major weapons and defense projects under way. The center also oversees work at the Navy’s Dam Neck facility in Virginia Beach, as well as smaller operations in California and New Jersey. Capt. Sheila Patterson assumed command in 2007. JOINT WARFARE ANALYSIS CENTER Joint military command with 577 employees. Grew out of the warfare center, but now completely separate. Analyzes projects that require coordination among military branches and agencies. Air Force Col. Matthew Molloy is commander. AEGIS TRAINING AND READINESS CENTER Teaches military personnel about sophisticated shipboard combat systems. With 311 employees, it serves U.S. military personnel, as well as those from Australia, Norway, Spain, South Korea and Japan. Commanded by Capt. Alexander Casimes. CENTER FOR SURFACE COMBAT SYSTEMS Part of the parent command for the Aegis Training and Readiness Center, with 106 employees. Commanded by Capt. Stephen Hampton. AEGIS BALLISTIC MISSILE DEFENSE Employs 350 people and is newest command on the base, recently relocated from Crystal City. Oversaw the February shoot-down of a satellite. Commanded by Rear Adm. Alan B. Hicks, the only admiral currently stationed at Dahlgren. AIR FORCE 20TH SPACE CONTROL SQUADRON, DETACHMENT 1 Tracks satellites and debris in space. Has 57 employees, commanded by Air Force Lt. Col. Steven Buzon.
