Union Pacific Railroad Bridge

USA / Iowa / Carter Lake /
 bridge, railway bridge

The first Union Pacific bridge between Omaha and Council Bluffs opened during 1872, in some respects completing the Transcontinental Railroad. An increase in traffic led to replacement of the span with a double track bridge during 1887. This is turn was replaced by the present bridge during 1917. Union Pacific now operates mostly eastward traffic over the bridge, while westbound traffic is concentrated on the former C&NW Blair bridge to the north. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific had trackage rights over this line until 1980, and BNSF Railway currently operates over it on trackage rights. Amtrak's San Francisco Zephyr crossed over the Missouri on this bridge until April 25, 1982. America's railroads built 32 crossings over the Missouri River, of which 23 remain in use.
