The South Memorial Pool, part of the National September 11th Memorial, is located on the exact footprint of the former 2 World Trade Center.

2 World Trade Center
This was the site of 2 World Trade Center, a 110 floor tower that was part of the World Trade Center complex in downtown Manhattan, New York City. Ground-breaking began in August 1966. The tower was completed in 1973, and tenants first moved into the tower in January 1972, which was a height of 415 m (1362 feet). It became home to many tenants, belonging to banking, securities, and financial companies. World Trade Center 2 was also popular with tourists, since there was an observation deck on the roof of the building.

It was destroyed along with its twin, One World Trade Center, in the 9/11 attacks. It was the second tower to be struck when United Airlines Flight 175 was crashed into the south facade of the tower at 9:03 AM striking at an off-angle between the 77th and 85th floors. It was the first tower to collapse, collapsing at 9:59 AM.

  • "Above the carnage rose prophetic a voice, Be not disheartened, compassion shall solve the problems of freedom yet. Sons of the Mother of All You shall yet be victorious, You shall yet laugh to scorn the attacks of the remainder of the Earth!" LONG, too long, O land, Traveling roads all even and peaceful, you learn’d from joys and prosperity only; But now, ah now, to learn from crises of anguish—advancing, grappling with direst fate, and recoiling not; And now to conceive, and show to the world, what your children en-masse really are; (For who except myself has yet conceiv’d what your children en-masse really are?) Walt Whitman, New York City - LEAVES OF GRASS, c. 1864 ANNUIT COEPTIS - Providence favors our endeavor! "Observe good faith and justice towards all nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all. Religion and morality enjoin this conduct; and can it be, that good policy does not equally enjoin it - It will be worthy of a free, enlightened, and at no distant period, a great nation, to give to mankind the magnanimous and too novel example of a people always guided by an exalted justice and benevolence. Who can doubt that, in the course of time and things, the fruits of such a plan would richly repay any temporary advantages which might be lost by a steady adherence to it ? Can it be that Providence has not connected the permanent felicity of a nation with its virtue ? The experiment, at least, is recommended by every sentiment which ennobles human nature. Alas! is it rendered impossible by its vices?" GEORGE WASHINGTON - Farewell Address - 1796
